Man flies flag half-staff, upside-down over election result
of The News-Sentinel

An American flag flown upside down is a signal of distress.

At half-staff, the flag is a sign of mourning.

Jeffrey Smith figures both dire conditions describe the United States now that Barack Obama has been elected president - which explains the intentionally startling appearance of the Stars and Stripes outside his house in rural Huntertown.

“Ships fly their flags upside down when they're sinking, and I see that happening to our country,” said the staunchly Republican Smith, 42, who considers his actions patriotic, not disrespectful.

“I'm for the Bill of Rights, and I'm concerned about Obama's positions on the ‘fairness doctrine' (which some observers believe would target conservative talk radio) and the Second Amendment (the right to keep and bear arms).” Smith, a financial planner and former Eagle Scout, also worries about Obama's stated desire to “spread the wealth around,” his support for abortion rights, his ability to appoint liberal judges and his intention to expand the federal government's role in health care and other areas.

Smith knows some will perceive his silent protest as a backlash against America's first black president, but he insists his motivation was policy - not pigmentation.

“I like (Secretary of State) Condoleezza Rice, and I liked (former Secretary of State) Colin Powell before he endorsed Obama,” said Smith, who hopes his flag will motivate conservative voters to undo the damage he fears was done Tuesday - starting with the next congressional election two years from now.

Smith said most of his neighbors “love” what he's done, and this week's results seem to bear that out. Republican John McCain received 204 votes in the precinct containing Smith's house on Carroll Ridge Drive in Huntertown, compared with 124 for Obama.

“I think it's pretty funny, although I don't really care for the upside-down thing,” said neighbor Chris Eastman, 33. “I figured (Smith) would do something with the flag. He's pretty enthusiastic.”

Smith hopes McCain's defeat will compel the GOP to nominate a “real” conservative in four years - somebody like Republican Indiana Rep. Mike Pence. In the meantime, he'll continue to protest policies he finds inconsistent with America's founding documents and ideals. “I was shocked Indiana went for Obama. But I don't think that was an endorsement of him. It was a repudiation of Bush,” he said.

Nor is Smith alone in his protest. The owner of a Decatur tire store flew his flag upside-down - but not lowered - following Obama's victory Tuesday.

But Smith's flag - which he flew at half-staff after Bill Clinton was elected president in 1992 - will probably return to its normal configuration long before there's a Republican in the White House again.

“I'll have to fly my Purdue flag on the weekends and game days, and I'll never let the American flag (which must be flown above other flags) touch the ground,” he said.

  • Sherrie's racism
Once again, because a white man is in total disagreement with the policies of a man who happens to be black, the big "R" word comes out. Is it also racist every time a black person disagrees with something George Bush does or protests his policies? I'm so sick of the weak minded and their cries of racism. It is that kind of attitude that not only creates a larger racial divide in this country but also creates bitterness among people of all different races.
A socialist of ANY color is still a socialist!
It is people who voted for color and not for policies or qualifications, just to feel better about themselves and their "diversity", that are going to be the downfall of our great nation and everything it stands for.
How about some bible verses on the sanctity of life? Have you looked at barrack's abortion record or would that be racist?

  • Bible Verses
Sherry,

Way to pull those Bible verses way way out of context!

You seem as uninformed in the matters of the Bible as you are in matters of politics!

Any ol'hack can make just about any given verse say what he/she wants it to say.

  • Flag Upside down and half staff
This is not only racist it is silly and childish. I am surprised the paper ran it too. We can rationalize whatever we choose but it is what it is. The truth cannot be hidden, not from us and not from God. This is just immature. I personally thought Bush was the worst President we never elected and I knew him BEFORE the election. I was vehemently opposed to him but I never did such silly inane things as this. I simply worked harder. As for our country going futher down the tube, it couldn't possibly. Just a few verses to ponder should anyone question this issue:

Matthew 23:27
Acts 17:26
Rev 5:9
Proverbs 16:5
Numbers 12:1
Romans 12:17,21

  • Man Flies Flag, etc
I am glad to be one of many "civil-disobedient" protestors in our area. I have been wearing a black ribbon on my lapel since last Wednesday. I wore it in 1992 and 1996 when Bill Clinton was elected. I wore it after 911 as well. I hoped that I would never have to wear it again. Alas, that wasn't meant to be. I will wear until Inauguration Day and put it away. If, God help us, Obama wins re-election, I will wear it again.

I never really thought that this country would elect an avowed Socialist. I mean, come on, in Vermont (California of the East Coast) you expect it. Did no one listen when he ran in the primaries? Did no one listen when he discussed redistributing wealth? Is this the "change" that people want, dependency on the government? Does anyone really understand what it means to rely on the government for anything? Katrina wasn't a clue? I just don't get it.

I am truly frightened. Nationalized health insurance? Indiana has nine different Medicaid programs. Can you imagine what it will be like on the national level?

And is Obama really about change? So far he has only appointed old Clinton party hacks. How is that change? He is also backing down on his middle class tax cut, which I am not surpised. He is beginning his excuses early. His entire strategy for the next four years when he doesn't change anything will be to blame it all on the Bush administration. When he runs for re-election, he'll defend his lack of change by saying he had so much to clean up, he couldn't get to his agenda, so come on and vote for him again and he'll really show us what he can do. Then the real damage will be done.

I am sad for us all.

  • Race card
I would be no more likely to vote for a person with obama's past and present beliefs and policies, no matter what color he or she was. What seems extremely racist to me is that so many people (black and white) in this country voted FOR him because of the color of his skin. How is that any better than voting against someone for the same reason? I'm tired of people make this about color and ignoring the facts!

  • Race Card
Way to play that race card there Sarah! When the battle of wit and ideas is lost, the race card - like the joker card that seems to find its way into the deck - is played.

It only makes a fool out of the one that throws it!

To all of you who are complaining about the results of the election: Get over it.....A black man is YOUR PRESIDENT now!! Either deal with it or leave the country. Obama 08. African Americans have voted for white candidates throughout American History....it's time for us to shine;)

I am also grieving because of the election's outcome. Now I know firsthand how Hitler mesmerized the people of Germany, but my hope and strength is in God's hands: He is on the throne (Isaiah 41:10).

Yes, it would have been a day of great rejoicing if the president-elect had the caliber of Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, or Condoleezza Rice. Instead, he disdains human life and considers children to be a punishment.

  • Socialism
I believe Mr. Smith is opposing the platform that Mr. Obama ran during the campaign. The direction that Mr. Obama proposed is socialism. Hopefully, President-elect Obama will govern from the center although this is not what he promised his base during the campaign.

This is not what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they crafted the Constitution. Their vision of America was based on rugged individualism which has made this the greatest country the world has ever seen, in my opinion.

We may have reached a tipping point in this country in which the majority of Americans do want socialism. Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it. "A government big enough to give you everything you want, is big enough to take everything you have", Thomas Jefferson.

  • half staff flag
Well, Mr.Smith, I'm sorry you didn't read the part of my comment in which I thought I defended your right to free speech. I would not burn a flag unless it was done properly. AND, I do know the rules of "flagship", having served as a counselor at a "Y" camp in my younger years. Go ahead, fly your flag. BUT, if McCain had won and someone on the other side had done this, I'll just bet you would have been the first one to a)denigrate and b) demand that it be corrected immediately.
You see, I used to be one of you--a true, blue Republican, as were my parents and grandparents. I watched the convention in 1992 and realized my party had left me. I do love this country and sincerely hope we are facing a better future. It can't be any worse than the past eight years!

  • It seems....
I am guessing Mary Ann is clueless on the rights of speech and the proper display of the flag. Its unfortunate that the very same type of person would agree when liberals at crazy institutions like Berkely would burn the Stars and Stripes!

  • Chance? Bigots?
The office of the President of the United States, and thereby what's left of the free world, is not something that should be left up to "chance" as mary ann suggested. But I suppose if you're voting for chance and change together.......well, who knows. I wonder if mary ann wrote any letters regarding disdain of our political process to the so called artist who hung an effigy of Sara Palin from his house.
As far as Rita's bigot comment, that just proves my point.

I don't even think that should be put in the paper. It just makes us look like bigots.

  • half-staff flag
How sad for those who didn't get their way in this election! I disliked George Bush, but I respect the office of the President. The fact that Mr. Smith and others who commented, seem not to even give Obama a chance! It is not, as suggested, "political correctness", but the political divisiveness that has grown in this country since the far, far right has denigrated any who disagree with their social and political causes.
I would never fly a flag upside down to protest an election. Ah well, we do live in a nation that respects the right to free speech, even though it shows closed minds and disdain for our political process.

  • Mike Pence should replace John Boner as GOP leader
Smith hopes McCain's defeat will compel the GOP to nominate a “real” conservative in four years - somebody like Republican Indiana Rep. Mike Pence. In the meantime, he'll continue to protest policies he finds inconsistent with America's founding documents and ideals. “I was shocked Indiana went for Obama. But I don't think that was an endorsement of him. It was a repudiation of Bush,” he said.

The first step towards nominating Mike Pence in 2012 is to get him in as Republican Leader in the House. Mike Pence is the man to lead the Republicans back to the majority.

*Indiana has been retracted from 0bama's win column as McCain now leads by 1 million votes.

  • "silent" protest
I admire the fact that Mr Smith had the guts to protest our new president elect at all. In this age of political correctness where any protest aimed towards barrack and his policies are automaticaly deamed racist, it's refreshing to see someone with enough convictions in what he believes (as did our founding fathers)to take such an obvious stand. Way to go!

  • Agree with philosophy
I wrote a blog on Tuesday saying I would fly my flag upside down. Commend him for doing what he is doing. Served in the military for 20 years, sorry it has to come to this. Feel that he doesn't deserve because of the people he hung out with. He couldn't get a security clearance if he was serving in the armed forces. George L. Hinson, U.S. Army retired.
